INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

WebGL Compute explores how to repurpose WebGL’s graphics‑focused pipeline for high‑performance computation. By leveraging GLSL ES shaders, readers learn how to run massively parallel workloads directly on the GPU using nothing more than a web browser. The book walks through practical techniques, minimal examples, and creative strategies for performing non‑graphical tasks such as simulation, data processing, and algorithm acceleration. Ideal for developers, researchers, and enthusiasts who want to push WebGL beyond rendering and tap into the hidden compute power available on virtually every device.

Useful in parts

Decent, but uneven. Some chapters are much stronger than others.

There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. Three stars feels about right. It will stay on my shelf, but it will not be the first one I reach for.

Strong content, uneven pacing

Almost excellent. A second edition could easily push it to five stars.

I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. A good addition to a technical library, as long as you know what you are buying.

The best book on this subject I have read

Finally, a book that treats gpu computing with the care it deserves.

There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The chapters on gpu computing are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. The writing is direct and does not waste space on filler, which I value in a technical book. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with gpu computing.
